KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government will ensure all nine criteria for scheduled waste management are fully met before assuming full control in November.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the criteria include legal frameworks, technical infrastructure, online reporting systems and human resource capacity.
He stressed that compliance is crucial for Sabah to enforce and administer laws under Article 95C of the Federal Constitution.
“Sabah is now in a stronger position to enhance sustainable, efficient, effective and resilient environmental management, marking another strategic success for the wellbeing of the people,” Jafry said in a statement.
He attributed this progress to strong synergy between federal and state ministries and the Environment Protection Department.
Jafry recently paid a courtesy call on Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup in Kuala Lumpur.
He described the discussions as a key step towards strengthening Sabah’s autonomy in environmental governance.
The talks also underscored the state’s commitment to having full authority to implement environmental legislation aligned with local needs and the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
