Sarawak is developing Samarahan into a low-carbon city, with 405 hectares of green area for native trees, recreation, and research.
KUCHING: The Sarawak government is formulating comprehensive plans to develop the southern region, particularly Samarahan, into a modern low-carbon city.
Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this aligns with public health needs and environmental sustainability.
He stated that development planning is more accurate when supported by statistical data and economic analysis.
“We are planning for future generations… this comprehensive planning will benefit Samarahan, Kuching and Serian,” he said.
Abang Johari added that large-scale green areas with various tropical trees are planned.
These areas will serve as tourist attractions and function as research centres.
He was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Boulevard Samarahan near here today.
In the Samarahan area, 405 hectares have been identified for green zones.
These zones will be planted with Sarawak native hardwoods such as belian.
The Premier said the area cannot be used for commercial or residential development.
Any proposed development for the area must be tabled in the State Legislative Assembly.
“The construction of this boulevard is just the beginning,” he noted.
He said the area can be developed into a recreational and jogging spot for residents.
This will be similar to the State Library and Reservoir Park, allowing people to enjoy fresher air.
