Selangor expands recycling programme to all districts with e-waste focus

Selangor’s SELKitar programme collected 77,072 kg of recyclables, reached 412,812 homes, and plans e-waste collection expansion across all districts.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has launched the Selangor Recycling Programme (SELKitar) to advance the state’s recycling agenda and strengthen environmental sustainability.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced that 77,072 kg of recyclable materials had been collected under the programme as of last October.

The collections occurred across Sepang, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Kajang, Selayang, Ampang and Hulu Selangor districts.

Through collaboration with corporate partners like Nestlé Malaysia and local authorities, the programme reached 412,812 homes and premises across Selangor.

“Next year, we will step up efforts by looking at e-waste while trying to reach all districts and bring on board other strategic partners,” Amirudin said after the SELKitar Launch and Recycling Truck Handover Ceremony.

He welcomed potential partners and said the government would consider proposals to provide incentives for those involved.

“This is to encourage more parties to participate directly or indirectly in the SELKitar programme,” he added.

State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd provided 21 lorries to support collection operations.

She noted that each lorry would collect recyclables from approximately 1,500 houses per day on average.

“This programme focuses on the separation of recyclable materials at the source,” Jamaliah explained.

“It is essential to prevent them from causing pollution, being thrown away, or ending up in landfills.”

Through joint efforts with Media Selangor and KDEBWM, the SELKitar campaign uses the slogan ‘Separate, Return’ to encourage sustainability.

The programme was first introduced on April 22 and underwent a pilot phase with Nestlé Malaysia in selected housing areas.

It expanded on October 1 to bring recycling services directly to residents’ doorsteps with dedicated collection teams and regular schedules.
