Perak ruler says actions undermining inter-ethnic harmony must be firmly opposed, warns against turning nation into “house of discord”
KUALA KANGSAR: Any action that risks undermining national unity or disturbing harmonious inter-ethnic relations must be decisively rejected, said the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah.
His Royal Highness stated that efforts to unite the people face major obstacles when certain quarters sensationalise issues of race, religion, state, or region.
“This nation must not be turned into a house of discord, nor a playground for those intoxicated by power,” the Sultan declared at the Investiture Ceremony for State Honours and Medals of Perak Darul Ridzuan.
He delivered this message during the ceremony held at Istana Iskandariah in conjunction with the Ruler’s 69th birthday celebration.
Sultan Nazrin emphasised that independence represents more than just freedom from colonial rule.
“It is the attainment of intellectual liberty, political maturity, along with success in growing the economy and developing the nation,” he explained.
The Ruler stressed that Malaysia’s foundation recognises a population composed of various races practicing different religions and inheriting diverse cultures.
He warned that viewing differences negatively can undermine harmonious relations among people.
Sultan Nazrin stressed that the spirit of consensus established by the nation’s founding leaders must continue to be respected.
“Any voice, demand, or action that contradicts this spirit of unity must be firmly opposed,” he stated.
His Royal Highness also cautioned against actions driven excessively by emotion that could pose serious risks to the nation.
“The people must not be made victims of seemingly endless political disputes,” the Ruler added.
Sultan Nazrin expressed appreciation for the unity and support of the royal family members and state officials.
He acknowledged the contributions of the private sector, volunteer organisations, and community groups in complementing development efforts.
The ceremony was attended by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, and other members of the royal family. – Bernama
