Malaysia’s diplomatic strength showcased at 47th ASEAN Summit

Malaysia demonstrates diplomatic finesse at ASEAN Summit with Timor-Leste membership, KL Peace Accord, and US trade agreement signed.

PUTRAJAYA: The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits underscore Malaysia’s strength and finesse in diplomacy in navigating international geopolitical dynamics.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Malaysia’s capability as a respected diplomatic player was evident through several historic moments hosted in Kuala Lumpur.

“Malaysia does not have a large military and is a small nation, but we possess one superweapon — the finesse of our diplomacy,” he stated.

He noted that Malaysian diplomats are among the best at the international level and are becoming one of the most respected institutions.

Fahmi made these remarks while speaking at the Communications Ministry’s monthly assembly today.

The minister emphasised that Malaysia cannot separate its role as ASEAN chair from the global geopolitical situation.

“We are aware that the economy will be affected if we do not maintain good diplomatic relations with our trading partners… that is why Malaysia’s approach is to be non-aligned,” he explained.

History was made with the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Cambodia and Thailand during the summit.

US President Donald Trump commended Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s vital role in facilitating the peace deal.

Kuala Lumpur also witnessed ASEAN’s expansion for the first time in 26 years with Timor-Leste’s official admission as the 11th member.

The United States and Malaysia signed the US-Malaysia Reciprocal Trade Agreement, ending months of bilateral negotiations.

Washington committed to maintaining a 19% tariff on goods from Malaysia and identified 1,711 Malaysian products for zero% reciprocal tariffs.

The three-day summit at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre attracted 30 leaders and senior officials from multiple countries.

Discussions focused on regional security, economic resilience, and inclusive growth among participating nations. – Bernama
