Perlis customs seizes syabu, ketum, firecrackers worth RM1.44 mln

KANGAR: The Perlis Customs Department has seized syabu, ketum leaves and firecrackers worth RM1.44 million in this month’s Ops Benteng, the largest amount ever recorded in the state so far this year.

Its director, Wan Nor Wan Mamat said they seized 20kg of syabu worth RM800,000 and 20,000 ecstasy pills worth an estimated RM600,000 by the side of the exit road of the Tikam Baru Rest Service Area (southbound) exit, at the North-South Expressway, at about 10 pm on Nov 10.

“Our investigation found that the drugs were hidden in Chinese tea packets while the pills were kept in boxes. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he told reporters here, today.

He said the syndicate was believed to have unloaded the drugs at a quiet area before being picked up by the network of syndicates members in a bid to confuse the authorities.

Wan Nor said the department also seized one tonne (1,070 kg) of ketum leaves worth an estimated RM42,000 in several raids around Kuala Perlis.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 135(1) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952.

Meanwhile, the Customs also foiled an attempt to smuggle 63.7kg of firecrackers worth RM3,400 in front of a supermarket in Jalan Kuala Ketil, Sungai Petani, Kedah.

“The firecrackers were found in two vehicles and the case is being investigated under Section 135(1) of the Customs Act 1967,” he said. — Bernama
