GENTING HIGHLANDS: International DJ and producer R3HAB delivered an electrifying performance at Sunset by NEON: Upperground on June 20, treating Malaysian fans to an immersive experience enhanced by spectacular sound and visual production while promising that he would return to the country again next year.

“I think maybe like 10 times I’ve been here. I have to come for the Malay food, you know,” he told the media ahead of his performance.

Beyond the cuisine, R3HAB said Malaysia’s unique multicultural identity and warm hospitality have kept drawing him back.

“I like Malaysia. I always like Malaysia. I like the melting pot of cultures first of all and I find Malaysian people very welcoming and friendly. I also really like the food and I have always had really good memories of playing in Malaysia.

“It’s really nice to be back,” he said.

Although his trips have largely revolved around performances, the DJ revealed that he had previously visited Langkawi and hopes to explore more of the country in the future.

At Sunset by NEON: Upperground, R3HAB embraced a different creative direction, leaning towards a more melodic techno-inspired sound that aligned with the festival’s concept.

R3HAB said Malaysia’s unique multicultural identity and warm hospitality have kept drawing him back.

“For me, it’s a bit different because it’s a little more melodic techno-ish and a bit more techno. So it’s really nice for me because I can try something new creatively,” he said.

The producer also teased his growing collaboration with Ukrainian electronic duo ARTBAT, revealing that the pair had already released one track together and have another on the way.

“We already released a record and we have another one upcoming. It’s just nice to try something new,” he said.

Performing at the Upperground event for the first time also brought a sense of excitement for the globally renowned artist.

“I’ve never played their festival before, so it’s my first time. That’s exciting because I’ve been to many places already, but this is my first time here,” he said.

Known for blending genres and delivering energetic live sets, R3HAB said fans could expect more than just impressive visuals during his show.

“We have a few nice elements with visuals, but also a lot of edits and interesting remixes that we did. So I have something special for them,” he said.

His deep connection with Malaysian fans was evident throughout the interview, with the DJ visibly touched when told how much he is loved in the country.

Asked when fans could expect to see him again, R3HAB offered a simple but exciting answer.

“Hopefully next year. Next year I’m coming back,” he said.

In a light-hearted moment, the DJ even attempted a few Malay phrases, including “Apa khabar?”, much to the delight of those present.
