Production at Kazakhstan’s giant Tengiz field has resumed after a fire halted operations, easing concerns over global oil supply disruptions.
ASTANA: Production at Kazakhstan’s main Tengiz oil field has gradually resumed.
The restart comes more than a week after a fire at power generators forced a complete shutdown, contributing to a spike in global oil prices.
Operator Tengizchevroil confirmed the safe commencement of its power system and the initial resumption of crude oil production.
The consortium stated it is working to “progressively increase output as conditions allow”.
The giant Tengiz field is one of the world’s deepest and accounts for around a third of Kazakhstan’s total oil production.
Tengizchevroil produced around 220 million barrels in 2024.
The consortium is led by US energy giant Chevron, which holds a 50% stake.
ExxonMobil holds 25%, Kazakhstan’s KazMunayGas has 20%, and Russia’s Lukoil owns 5%.
Kazakhstan’s oil sector has faced additional pressure from Ukrainian attacks on Russian export infrastructure.
The country relies on this infrastructure to ship its crude to international markets.
