A bus travelling from Jakarta to Yogyakarta overturned, killing 16. The accident occurred at a highway interchange, with 34 people evacuated.
JAKARTA: A bus crashed on an Indonesian highway early Monday, killing at least 16 people.
The coach, travelling from the capital Jakarta to Yogyakarta, overturned after hitting a road barrier at an interchange.
Local search and rescue agency head Budiono said the bus was travelling at a “fairly high” speed when it reached the turn.
“We … have evacuated 34 people,” Budiono said in a statement.
He confirmed 15 people were pronounced dead at the scene, with another victim dying later in hospital.
Several injured victims were transported to the city of Semarang for treatment.
Footage from the agency showed rescuers moving a victim into a body bag next to the overturned bus.
Transport accidents are frequent in Indonesia, where vehicle maintenance is often poor and road rules are regularly flouted.
In 2024, at least 12 people died in a multi-vehicle crash on a highway during Eid al-Fitr travel.
A separate 2019 accident saw a bus plunge into a ravine on Sumatra, killing at least 35 people.
