Canada’s Carney warns of global order rupture at Davos

Canadian PM Mark Carney tells Davos the rules-based order is fading, urging middle powers to unite amid great power rivalry and US coercion.

DAVOS: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared the world is in the “midst of a rupture” in the global order, defined by great power competition.

Addressing the World Economic Forum, Carney said the old rules-based system and “American hegemony” that provided public goods are fading.

“We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition,” Carney told political and financial elites.

He described a new reality of “intensifying great power rivalry where the most powerful pursue their interests using economic integration as coercion.”

Carney warned that compliance will no longer buy safety for nations like Canada.

“The question for middle powers, like Canada, is not whether to adapt to this new reality. We must,” he stated.

He urged ambitious collective action, noting “if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”

His speech preceded an address by US President Donald Trump, whose impact on global affairs framed Carney’s analysis.

Carney’s warnings follow a Globe and Mail report detailing Canadian military plans for an insurgency-style response to a potential US invasion.

Trump has previously referred to Canada as a potential 51st state and recently posted a map implying a US takeover.

The Davos meeting has been dominated by Trump’s threats to enforce US control over Greenland.

“Canada stands firmly with Greenland and Denmark and fully supports their unique right to determine Greenland’s future,” Carney affirmed.
