CHRISTCHURCH: The gunman responsible for New Zealand’s deadliest mass shooting will begin an appeal against his sentence on Monday.
Brenton Tarrant (pic), a 35-year-old Australian white supremacist, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks.
He was convicted on 51 charges of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and one charge of committing a terrorist act. This marked the first time a New Zealand court had imposed a life sentence without the possibility of release.
Tarrant opened fire on two mosques during Friday prayers in March 2019, killing 51 Muslim worshippers and injuring dozens. He livestreamed the attack on Facebook using a head-mounted camera after releasing a racist manifesto online.
The atrocity, carried out with military-style semi-automatic weapons, shocked the nation and prompted the government to swiftly tighten gun laws.
