The family of Renee Good, shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis, hires Romanucci and Blandin law firm to investigate the killing and pursue potential legal action
MINNEAPOLIS: The family of a woman shot dead by a US immigration officer has hired a prominent law firm to investigate the killing.
Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot in her car by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on January 7 during operations targeting undocumented migrants in Minnesota.
The family announced the hiring of Romanucci and Blandin law firm, which represented George Floyd’s family, to conduct a civil investigation.
“The legal team intends to conduct its civil investigation with an understanding that transparency is essential in this case of national importance,” the lawyers said in a statement.
They vowed to provide regular public updates, citing a lack of transparency from federal investigators.
Local officials have complained that federal investigators have refused to share information with state and city law enforcement.
The law firm acknowledged that bringing legal action would be challenging due to “many immunities” afforded to federal officers.
“This process will not deter us in any way from fervently pursuing justice on behalf of Renee Good,” said founding partner Antonio Romanucci.
A vigil for Good was held exactly one week after the incident, which has thrust President Donald Trump’s mass-deportation effort back into the spotlight.
Minnesota has sought a temporary restraining order to pause the ICE operations in the state.
There have been confrontations between federal agents and protesters demanding a full investigation, with officers seen using pepper spray.
A number of school children have walked out of classes in protest at the ICE operation.
The officer who fired the shots, Jonathan Ross, has not been suspended or charged, with Trump and his officials insisting he acted in self-defense.
The federal immigration sweeps occurred amid a highly politicized fraud investigation in Minnesota.
