Four protesters were arrested after throwing apple crumble and custard at the Crown Jewels display case in London’s Tower of London, demanding a citizen’s assembly.
LONDON: Four people were arrested on Saturday after throwing apple crumble and custard at a display case containing Britain’s Crown Jewels.
The Metropolitan Police said officers responded to reports of criminal damage to the case holding the State Crown at the Tower of London.
A group called Take Back Power claimed responsibility for the stunt, demanding the government establish a permanent citizen’s assembly with powers to tax extreme wealth.
Video shared by the group showed a woman placing a foil tray of crumble against the glass, followed by a man splattering custard on top.
“Democracy has crumbled!” the woman yelled, while the man shouted “Britain is broken!”
The Imperial State Crown, worn by King Charles III at his coronation, was visible inside the undamaged case.
Historic Royal Palaces, which manages the tower, said the priceless jewels were not harmed.
The Jewel House temporarily closed for a police investigation but reopened later on Saturday.
The Crown Jewels comprise over 100 objects and 23,000 gemstones held in trust by the monarch for the nation.
The incident is the latest in a series of direct action protests targeting cultural sites in the UK.
Take Back Power also targeted the Ritz Hotel earlier in the week by dumping manure near its Christmas tree.
