Electric vehicle sales in Germany soared 43% in 2025, with Chinese manufacturers like BYD seeing explosive growth and capturing a larger slice of the market.
FRANKFURT: Electric vehicle sales in Germany rebounded strongly in 2025, with Chinese manufacturers making significant inroads.
Official data shows EV sales rose 43.2% last year to a total of 545,142 units.
This figure represents 19.1% of all new cars sold in the EU’s largest economy.
Chinese EV giant BYD saw its German sales skyrocket by over 700% to more than 23,000 cars.
This performance gave BYD a 0.8% share of Germany’s overall auto market.
The company overtook Tesla last year to become the world’s largest electric carmaker.
Imelda Labbe, head of the VDIK foreign carmakers’ lobby, attributed the growth to affordable international offerings.
“International vehicle manufacturers with affordable battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids have contributed disproportionately to growth in these segments,” Labbe said.
