Germany’s AfD party welcomes the new US security strategy and announces a visit to meet MAGA Republican allies, citing shared conservative goals.
BERLIN: Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has welcomed the new United States national security strategy.
The party also announced plans for a visit to meet allies within the Trump-aligned “Make America Great Again” movement this week.
“The AfD is fighting alongside its international friends for a conservative renaissance in North America and Europe,” said the party’s foreign policy spokesman Markus Frohnmaier.
Frohnmaier stated he would travel to the US on Thursday for meetings in Washington and New York.
The visit coincides with US President Donald Trump’s efforts to bolster far-right political forces in Europe.
The new US security strategy, released last week, praises the “growing influence of patriotic European parties”.
The 33-page document commits the US government to “cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations”.
Frohnmaier told AFP the “AfD is building strong partnerships with those forces that advocate national sovereignty, cultural identity and realistic security and migration policies”.
US Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, recently said she anticipated hosting about 40 AfD politicians.
AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla attended Trump’s second inauguration in January.
Several close Trump confidantes have become outspoken supporters of the German party.
Billionaire Elon Musk actively campaigned for AfD candidate Alice Weidel ahead of Germany’s February elections.
US Vice President JD Vance criticised other German parties for refusing to work with the AfD in a February speech.
Vance denounced alleged limits on “free speech” in Europe and attempts to exclude right-wing populists from power.
The Trump administration’s strategy similarly alleges Europe faces a “real and stark prospect of civilisational erasure”.
It cites immigration policies and “censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition” as reasons.
