REYKJAVIK: Iceland’s President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson will not stand for re-election in this year’s presidential poll, the 55-year-old former history professor announced in his New Year’s address on Monday, German news agency (dpa) quoted Icelandic broadcaster RUV.

The presidential election is scheduled to take place on June 1, 2024. There are currently no declared candidates.

Jóhannesson is the sixth president of Iceland, which was founded in 1944, and is in his second term of office. Up to three terms are possible.

The president is the head of state in the Nordic country and is elected directly by the people. The duties of the Icelandic president are largely representative.–Bernama
