Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited a missile strike site and warned Iran that its use of cluster munitions would bring greater retaliation.
JERUSALEM: Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited the site of a missile strike in central Israel on Monday, warning Iran that its use of cluster munitions would bring “more havoc on them”.
Herzog made the statement after inspecting a damaged home in the coastal city of Rishon LeZion, near Tel Aviv, which he said was hit by an Iranian cluster munition.
“This is the living room of a family where the cluster bomb fell straight into the living room, and you see the devastation,” he said in a statement released by his office.
Photos from the site showed a living room with walls blasted of chunks of cement, broken windows, and a floor littered with debris.
“They don’t understand that what they’re doing simply will bring more havoc on them,” Herzog added, describing the weapon as the “weapon of the weak” and “the weapon of those who are just chickening out, those guys from Iran”.
Israel’s first responders agency, Magen David Adom, reported that one woman sustained minor injuries from the strike despite being in a shelter.
The Israeli military has stated that approximately 50% of the missiles fired by Iran in the ongoing conflict contain cluster munitions, which scatter numerous bomblets through the air.
More than 100 states are party to the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions, which bans their use, transfer, production, and stockpiling, though neither Iran nor Israel have signed the treaty.
