Japan PM Takaichi maintains strong approval despite challenges

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sustains high approval ratings despite China tensions and economic contraction, with polls showing nearly 70% support for her government.

TOKYO: Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi continues to maintain strong public support despite worsening China relations and economic challenges.

The nationalist leader’s cabinet recorded a 69% approval rating with only 17% disapproval in a weekend Asahi Shimbun newspaper survey.

Kyodo News released similar findings showing 69.9% approval and 16.5% disapproval in their Sunday poll.

Takaichi assumed power on October 21, becoming Japan’s first female prime minister after replacing moderate rival Shigeru Ishiba following election setbacks.

The 64-year-old leader, who admits sleeping only two to four hours nightly, recently called a 3:00 am staff meeting in her intense start to leadership.

Her early tenure included hosting US President Donald Trump and attending regional summits in Malaysia and South Korea featuring talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Parliament comments about Taiwan on November 7 sparked diplomatic tensions with Beijing demanding retraction and advising against travel to Japan.

Economic concerns contributed to predecessor Ishiba’s downfall, with Monday’s data confirming third-quarter economic contraction.

Takaichi’s government is preparing a stimulus package exceeding 17 trillion yen (RM440 billion) that reports indicate could be finalised this week.
