At least 13 killed and 98 injured after an Interoceanic Train derails in Oaxaca, Mexico, with an investigation launched into the incident
MEXICO CITY: At least 13 people were killed after an Interoceanic Train derailed in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.
The Mexican Navy said the train was carrying 250 people, including nine crew members and 241 passengers.
Of those on board, 98 people were injured, with 36 receiving medical assistance.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said five of the injured were in critical condition.
Senior officials have been dispatched to the site to assist the families of those killed.
The governor of Oaxaca, Salomon Jara Cruz, expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
State authorities are coordinating with federal agencies to assist those affected.
Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into the incident.
The Interoceanic Train was inaugurated in 2023 under former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
It forms part of the broader Interoceanic Corridor project modernizing rail across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
The corridor connects Mexico’s Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.
The government aims to develop the isthmus into a strategic trade corridor to compete with the Panama Canal.
The initiative expands ports, railways and industrial infrastructure in southern Mexico.
The train service is part of a push to expand passenger and freight rail in the region.
