Two family members of Mexico’s education secretary were shot dead in Colima, with three suspects killed by police in a subsequent operation.
MEXICO CITY: Two family members of Mexico’s Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado (pic), were shot and killed in their home. The attack occurred in the violent western state of Colima.
Delgado identified the victims as his aunt, Eugenia Delgado, and his cousin, Sheila. “Deep shock, outrage, and sorrow over the events that occurred this morning in Colima, where my aunt Eugenia Delgado and my cousin Sheila were brutally murdered in their home,” he wrote on social media.
Local authorities reported that police later tracked the suspects’ vehicle to a home. Three suspects were killed in a gunfight with officers on Saturday afternoon.
Investigators said they found weapons and clothing at the suspects’ home linked to the early morning double homicide. The prosecutor’s office has not identified a motive or confirmed if other suspects are being sought.
Colima is one of Mexico’s most violent states and recorded the country’s highest homicide rate in 2023 and 2024. Delgado was appointed education secretary by President Claudia Sheinbaum in 2024 after serving as national president of the ruling Morena party.
