King Mohammed VI accepts Trump’s invitation to join the US-led ‘Board of Peace’ initiative aimed at Middle East peace and global conflict resolution.
RABAT: Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has accepted an invitation from US President Donald Trump to become a founding member of a new “Board of Peace”.
The Moroccan foreign ministry announced the monarch’s acceptance in a statement published by the MAP news agency on Monday.
“Welcoming President Donald Trump’s commitment and vision to promoting peace,” the king “has graciously accepted this invitation,” the ministry stated.
It added that Morocco would “ratify the charter establishing this board”.
The US-led initiative aims to “contribute to peace efforts in the Middle East and adopt a new approach to resolving conflicts around the world”.
The board was originally conceived to oversee the rebuilding of Gaza.
Its charter, however, does not appear to limit its role solely to the Palestinian territory.
Member countries would be represented on the board by their head of state or government.
According to the charter seen by AFP, members could join for three years or longer if they paid more than USD 1 billion within the first year.
The White House has asked various world leaders to sit on the board, which will be chaired by Trump himself.
Invited leaders include Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Premier Viktor Orban and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The initial reaction from key allies France and Canada has been lukewarm.
Others who have received invitations, such as Putin, have not yet announced whether they will accept.
