NASA astronauts will bring modern smartphones on upcoming lunar missions, starting with Crew-12 and Artemis II, to capture and share their experiences.
ISTANBUL: NASA astronauts will be permitted to carry the latest smartphones on upcoming Moon missions. The space agency’s Administrator, Jared Isaacman, made the announcement.
According to Isaacman, astronauts will begin flying with smartphones starting with the Crew-12 mission in February and the Artemis II mission in March. He stated the move will allow crews to capture special moments for their families.
“We are giving our crews the tools to capture special moments for their families and share inspiring images and video with the world,” he wrote on the social media platform X.
He explained that NASA teams challenged long-standing processes to qualify modern hardware for spaceflight on an expedited timeline. Isaacman added that this operational urgency will serve NASA well for future science and research.
“That operational urgency will serve NASA well as we pursue the highest-value science and research in orbit and on the lunar surface. This is a small step in the right direction,” he said.
