NATO says US troop reduction on eastern flank is an adjustment, with forces still larger than pre-2022 levels despite planned drawdowns.
BRUSSELS: NATO has described planned US troop reductions on the alliance’s eastern flank as a routine adjustment.
The alliance confirmed it received advance notification of Washington’s intention to scale back some deployments.
A NATO official told AFP the US commitment to the alliance remained clear despite the planned adjustments.
“Even with this adjustment, the US force posture in Europe remains larger than it has been for many years, with many more US forces on the continent than before 2022,” the official said.
Romania’s defence ministry revealed details of the scale-down on Wednesday.
Washington plans to halt rotation of a brigade with elements in several NATO countries including Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary.
The anticipated US drawdown follows a global review of American military deployments.
No official announcement has been made regarding the troop reductions.
The prospect of reduced US presence has raised concerns among some allies about potential Russian aggression.
NATO moved quickly to reassure members about its defensive capabilities.
“The US commitment to NATO is clear,” the official reiterated.
The alliance emphasised it maintains robust defence plans to deter potential aggression.
NATO said it continues working to ensure adequate forces and capabilities for collective defence. – AFP
