Nestle recalls infant formula batches in France, Germany and other European countries due to a quality issue with a supplier ingredient.
ZURICH: Swiss food giant Nestle has announced a precautionary recall of batches of infant formula in several European countries.
The recall affects products in France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy and Sweden.
The group said it detected a “quality issue” in an ingredient sourced from one of its major suppliers.
“Nestle has undertaken testing of all arachidonic acid oil and corresponding oil mixes used in the production of potentially impacted infant nutrition products,” it stated.
No illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the products involved to date.
Nestle said it is in contact with authorities in the relevant countries to ensure necessary steps are taken.
“Nestle assures parents and caregivers that it is implementing appropriate actions, including a product recall where necessary.”
Nestle France specified it is carrying out a preventive and voluntary recall of certain batches of its Guigoz and Nidal formulas.
This follows new investigations showing the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin that can cause digestive issues.
In Germany, the affected products are sold under the names Beba and Alfamino.
The company has posted pictures on its local websites showing the batch numbers of the affected products.
It has also provided instructions for returning products and obtaining a refund.
A dedicated phone number has been set up to answer consumer questions.
