Nvidia CEO says US underestimated China’s AI chip development capabilities

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says US initially underestimated China’s technology sector potential, noting China now produces millions of AI chips

MOSCOW: The United States initially underestimated China’s potential in developing the technology sector according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

Huang stated in a Fox News interview that China can now fully rely on its own industry rather than US technologies.

“We underestimated China’s ability to accelerate their indigenous technology industry,” Huang told Fox News.

He added that China currently manufactures millions of AI chips independently from American technology.

“It is very clear now their military does not rely on American technology,” Huang emphasised.

The Nvidia chief noted they essentially had to leave the Chinese market under the previous US administration.

Huang expressed that China itself would not allow Nvidia to return to its market now.

He nevertheless expressed hope for improved relations under the current US president.

Huang suggested this could potentially allow Nvidia’s return to the Chinese market.

US President Donald Trump previously announced intentions to “friendly compete” for AI leadership.

Trump called the US a global superpower in artificial intelligence that allegedly outpaces China.

The competition specifically involves semiconductor production required for AI technologies.

In January, the US Department of Commerce imposed new restrictions on advanced chip exports.

These restrictions aim to protect national security and prevent technology use by unfriendly countries.

The department stated the measures prevent hostile states from developing weapons using AI.

Restrictions also target preventing cyberattacks and mass surveillance capabilities development.

The agency assured trusted partners and allies would maintain access to advanced technologies.

China has criticised the US decision to impose these export restrictions.
