Pope Leo XIV calls for Venezuelans’ welfare to prevail, urging paths to justice and peace while guaranteeing sovereignty and human rights after the US operation.
VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV has called for the welfare of the Venezuelan people to take precedence following the toppling of President Nicolas Maduro.
Speaking after the Angelus prayer in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, the pontiff said the situation must “lead to overcoming violence and embarking on paths of justice and peace”.
He stressed the need to guarantee the country’s sovereignty and ensure the rule of law.
The Pope also emphasised respecting the human and civil rights of every person.
He called for work towards a future of “collaboration, stability, and harmony”, with special attention to the poorest citizens suffering from the economic crisis.
His comments came a day after US special forces captured Maduro in Caracas.
President Donald Trump declared that the US would “run” Venezuela and tap its oil reserves.
