Rare Superman debut comic sells for record RM61.05mil

A rare 1938 copy of Action Comics No. 1, which first introduced Superman, has been sold to an anonymous collector for a record US$15 million

ISTANBUL: A rare copy of the 1938 comic book “Action Comics No. 1,” which first introduced Superman to the world, has been sold for US$15 million (RM61.05 million).

An anonymous collector purchased the historic comic through a collaboration between a US auction house and a collector platform.

Fewer than 100 copies of the comic are known to exist today, according to Vincent Zurzolo of Metropolis Collectibles and ComicConnect, which negotiated the sale.

“This is the advent of the golden age of comics, and Action Comics No. 1 is the holy grail of holy grails,” said Zurzolo.

The sale price shattered the previous record of US$9.12 million (RM37.12 million), set when “Superman No. 1” was auctioned last November.

First released in 1938 and originally sold for 10 cents, the issue was a compilation featuring stories of various characters.

Action Comics No. 1 is widely considered the first American comic book to feature superheroes.

It played a major role in sparking the genre’s rapid rise in popularity during the mid-20th century. – Bernama-Anadolu
