Kremlin says it views some aspects of new US peace plan for Ukraine positively but wants expert discussions on other parts of the unpublished proposal.
MOSCOW: Russia has reviewed the latest US draft plan to end the Ukraine war and views some aspects positively.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov stated the new proposal requires “truly serious analysis” during comments to Russian state television.
The unpublished plan represents a revised version of an earlier 28-point proposal that Ukraine and Europe had rejected.
US President Donald Trump described it as a “fine-tuned” version and is dispatching officials to meet with both sides.
“Some aspects can be viewed positively, but many require special discussions among experts,” Ushakov said on Wednesday.
The original plan faced European criticism for allegedly accommodating Moscow’s demands.
It would have required Ukrainian withdrawal from eastern Donetsk region and US de facto recognition of Donetsk, Crimea and Lugansk as Russian territory.
Ukraine later announced reaching an “understanding” with the US after Geneva talks pared back some disputed points.
Significant differences persist between Russian and Ukrainian negotiating positions despite these modifications.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next week to finalise the plan.
US army secretary Dan Driscoll will concurrently meet with Ukrainian officials.
“The peace plan hasn’t been discussed in detail with anyone yet,” Ushakov confirmed.
US officials expressed optimism about ending the conflict while acknowledging key sticking points remain.
European allies previously regarded the initial proposal as a Kremlin wish list and cautioned against excessive concessions.
EU Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen said negotiations had begun laying groundwork for potential settlement.
“I want to be clear from the very outset: Europe will stand with Ukraine and support Ukraine every step of the way,” she told EU lawmakers.
She warned that Russia shows no genuine signs of wanting to cease hostilities.
Meanwhile, Ukraine reported another night of air attacks amid ongoing diplomatic efforts.
A Russian drone attack on Zaporizhzhia region wounded over a dozen people and damaged dozens of homes overnight.
