Sudan army breaks paramilitary siege on key city Kadugli

Sudanese army forces have entered the besieged city of Kadugli, breaking a paramilitary blockade that had trapped residents for much of the three-year war.

KHARTOUM: Sudanese army forces have broken a paramilitary siege on the key southern city of Kadugli.

“Our forces have entered Kadugli and lifted the siege,” an army source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The city in South Kordofan state had been surrounded for much of the nearly three-year war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

The siege was enforced by RSF fighters and their local allies from a faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North.

This follows the army’s breakthrough in late January at the neighbouring town of Dilling, which faced similar famine conditions.

“After fierce battles on the road between Dilling and Kadugli, our forces defeated the RSF and their supporting Hilu militia, inflicting heavy losses upon them,” another army source said.

The United Nations confirmed a famine in Kadugli last year.

The wider southern Kordofan region is now the war’s fiercest front line, where hundreds of thousands face starvation in the world’s largest hunger crisis.

The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced 11 million people across Sudan.
