Tesla shifts self-driving software to monthly subscription only from February

Tesla will offer its Full Self-Driving software only as a monthly subscription after February 14, ending the one-time purchase option.

TESLA will make its Full Self-Driving software available only as a monthly subscription after February 14.

CEO Elon Musk announced the change, which ends the option for a one-time purchase of the system.

Currently, Tesla owners in the US can buy the FSD (Supervised) package for a single payment of $8,000 or subscribe for $99 per month.

The FSD system is a driver-assistance feature that requires active human supervision and intervention.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation last year into 2.88 million Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD.

That probe followed more than 50 reports of traffic-safety violations and a series of crashes.

Tesla added the “Supervised” label for the FSD software used in consumer vehicles.

An unsupervised version of the software is used to move new cars from factory assembly lines to delivery lots.

The standard Autopilot system helps Tesla vehicles with acceleration, braking, and lane-keeping on highways.

The more advanced FSD capability enables automated lane changes and response to traffic signals on city streets. – Reuters
