Tesla to double Austin robotaxi fleet next month, says Musk

Elon Musk announces Tesla’s Austin robotaxi fleet will double in December, expanding self-driving service currently operating in two US cities.

AUSTIN: Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the company’s robotaxi fleet in Austin will double next month.

“The Tesla Robotaxi fleet in Austin should roughly double next month,” Musk stated in a post on X.

The exact number of robotaxis currently operating remains undisclosed.

Tesla’s self-driving service currently operates in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area.

All vehicles still require safety monitors despite being autonomous.

The company recently received a permit to operate ride-hailing services in Arizona.

Musk previously predicted robotaxis would operate without safety drivers in large parts of Austin this year.

He also forecasted expansion to eight to ten metropolitan areas by year-end.

In July, Musk projected Tesla robotaxis would serve approximately half the US population by December.

The robotaxi industry has rebounded after years of challenges including missed targets and regulatory hurdles.
