Trump administration actively discusses potential purchase of Greenland

White House confirms President Trump is actively discussing buying Greenland for US national security, citing Arctic deterrence against Russia and China.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has “actively discussed” the potential purchase of Greenland with his national security team.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the discussions when asked about a possible US offer to buy the territory from Denmark.

She stated the team is currently evaluating what a potential purchase would entail.

Leavitt reiterated that Trump believes acquiring Greenland aligns with US national security interests.

“He views it in the best interest of the United States to deter Russian and Chinese aggression in the Arctic region,” she said.

When questioned about not ruling out military action against NATO ally Denmark, Leavitt said all options remain on the table for President Trump.

“The president’s first option, always, has been diplomacy,” she added.

Separately, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he plans to meet with Denmark next week.

Denmark requested the talks following Trump’s threats directed at Greenland.

“I’ll be meeting with them next week,” Rubio told reporters.
