Trump extends Iran ceasefire for negotiations, maintains blockade

President Trump extends a ceasefire with Iran to allow more time for talks but orders the US naval blockade of Iranian ports to continue.

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump announced an extension to a ceasefire with Iran to allow more time for negotiations. He simultaneously ordered the US military to maintain a naval blockade of Iran’s ports.

The extension came hours before the truce was believed to be set to expire. Trump stated the move followed a request from Pakistan’s leaders.

“The trip to Pakistan will not be happening today,” a White House official said, cancelling an expected visit by Vice President JD Vance for peace talks. The White House said any updates on in-person meetings would be announced later.

Trump attributed the stalled talks to internal divisions within Iran. He said Pakistani leaders asked him to extend the pause in hostilities.

“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured… and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

He stated the ceasefire would last until Iranian leaders submit a unified proposal. Discussions would then proceed “one way or the other.”

The US blockade of ports on Iran’s coast in the Strait of Hormuz will remain active. Trump directed the military to “in all other respects, remain ready and able.”
