US President Donald Trump imposes additional 10% tariffs on Canadian goods following dispute over Ontario’s anti-tariff advertisement featuring Ronald Reagan.
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE: US President Donald Trump announced he is increasing tariffs on Canadian goods by an additional 10%.
The decision comes after a dispute over an anti-tariff advertisement from Ontario featuring late US President Ronald Reagan.
Trump called the ad “fake” and accused Canadian officials of serious misrepresentation of facts.
“Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now,” he added.
The Ontario advertisement used quotes from Reagan’s 1987 radio address warning about trade war ramifications from high tariffs.
The Ronald Reagan Foundation responded that Ontario had used “selective audio and video” and was reviewing legal options.
Ontario had planned to pull the advertisement on Monday to restart negotiations but aired it again during Saturday’s World Series game.
The World Series features Canadian team Toronto Blue Jays facing US team Los Angeles Dodgers.
Trump’s global tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos have previously hit Canada hard, causing job losses and business pressure.
The United States and Canada currently operate under the USMCA trade agreement, keeping approximately 85% of cross-border trade tariff-free.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently stated the United States has raised “its tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression.”
Both leaders will attend an APEC dinner in South Korea on Wednesday, though Trump has said he won’t meet with Carney. – AFP
