Trump launches US bid to host World Expo 2035 in Miami

President Donald Trump announces a US bid for Miami to host World Expo 2035, naming Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead the campaign.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has launched a bid to host the World Expo 2035 in Miami, Florida.

The Republican leader announced the move on Thursday, framing the event as a major economic opportunity.

He named Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Miami native, to oversee the US campaign for the prestigious international showcase.

“Miami Expo 2035 can be the next big milestone in our new Golden Age of America,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

He said the event would create thousands of jobs and add billions to the US economy.

World Expos are held every five years and require years of lobbying and multibillion-dollar commitments from host governments.

The selection of a host city is made by member states of the Paris-based International Exhibitions Bureau.

The United States has not hosted a World’s Fair since 1984, though past events have left landmarks like Seattle’s Space Needle.

Last year’s Expo in Osaka, Japan, attracted over 27 million visitors from roughly 160 countries and regions.

Secretary Rubio will lead the bid while also managing his expanded portfolio of additional high-level government roles.

The bid enters what is expected to be a crowded global race for the 2035 hosting rights.
