US President Donald Trump urges Ukraine to act swiftly on a potential peace deal as US and Ukrainian negotiators prepare for talks in Miami.
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to move “quickly” to secure a deal to end Russia’s invasion.
“Well, they’re getting close to something, but I hope Ukraine moves quickly. I hope Ukraine moves quickly because Russia is there,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday.
He warned that delays could lead Russia to change its position.
The push for a swift resolution comes ahead of fresh talks expected in Miami this weekend.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet Ukraine’s negotiator Rustem Umerov in Florida.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed his officials would meet US counterparts on Friday and Saturday.
The US pair will also separately meet Russian officials in Miami, according to a White House official.
Russia’s economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev is expected to be part of the Russian delegation.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has reiterated Moscow’s intention to pursue its maximalist military aims in Ukraine.
Kyiv and Washington report progress on future security guarantees for Ukraine.
Disagreements remain, however, on what territory Ukraine might have to cede in any deal. – AFP
