Ubisoft to close Halifax studio, cutting 71 jobs in Canada

Ubisoft is closing its Halifax studio in Canada, affecting 71 employees, as part of a broader cost-cutting and restructuring initiative.

PARIS: French video game giant Ubisoft has announced the closure of its development studio in Halifax, Canada.

The decision will affect 71 employees at the studio, which specialised in free-to-play mobile titles.

Ubisoft stated the move aims to rationalise operations, improve efficiency, and reduce costs as part of a broader restructuring.

The Halifax team had contributed to the upcoming mobile title “Rainbow Six Mobile”, set for release on February 23.

Many of the studio’s workers had unionised in December, joining the Game and Media Workers Guild of Canada.

Ubisoft clarified that the plan to shut the studio was in motion before the workers unionised.

The company committed to providing full redundancy pay packages and career transition support for affected staff.

The union, CWA Canada, called the news devastating and demanded an explanation for the sudden decision.

Union president Carmel Smyth vowed to pursue every legal recourse to protect the workers’ rights.

Ubisoft has been cutting costs and jobs since 2023, shedding several studios and over 3,000 employees globally.

The group, which had over 17,000 employees as of late September, launched a voluntary redundancy programme in October.

It is also restructuring its northern European studios in Sweden and Finland.

Ubisoft’s share price fell more than 50% in 2025, with a new corporate structure expected this month.

The new plan will organise studios into more autonomous “creative houses” working on different franchises.
