US consulate in Karachi stormed by pro-Iranian protesters

Hundreds of pro-Iranian protesters attempted to storm the US consulate in Karachi, smashing windows and clashing with police.

KARACHI: Hundreds of pro-Iranian protesters attempted to storm the United States consulate in the Pakistani megacity of Karachi on Sunday.

A crowd of young demonstrators climbed over the main gate and gained access to the driveway of the consular building, smashing some windows in the process.

Police responded by firing tear gas at the protesters, who subsequently dispersed from the scene.

Social media videos showed youngsters smashing the windows of the main consulate building, with the American flag visible flying over the barbed wire-topped compound perimeter.

“We need to remain united, and no power can stop us,” one young protester could be heard saying in footage from the scene.

“We are setting the American consulate in Karachi on fire, and God willing, we are avenging the killing of our leader,” another protester declared while filming others trying to start a blaze.

Thousands of people also took to the streets in the eastern city of Lahore and in northern Skardu, with a further demonstration expected near the diplomatic enclave housing the US embassy in Islamabad later in the afternoon.
