US urges Cambodia and Thailand to fully implement Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord

The US calls on Cambodia and Thailand to end hostilities, withdraw weapons, and fully implement the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, welcoming ASEAN mediation.

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States has reiterated its call for Cambodia and Thailand to end hostilities and fully implement the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord.

Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US Department of State, Thomas “Tommy” Pigott, said the nations must withdraw heavy weapons and cease the emplacement of landmines.

“We welcome ASEAN leaders coming together this week to support Cambodia and Thailand fully honouring their commitments to end this conflict,” he said in a statement.

Pigott stated this includes establishing mechanisms to accelerate humanitarian demining and address border issues.

Foreign ministers and officials from ASEAN are convening in Malaysia’s capital for a special meeting on the ongoing situation.

The Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be chaired by Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The US continues to urge both parties to adhere to their commitments under the peace accord.
