Zelensky hails ‘constructive’ call with US envoys on Ukraine peace plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a substantive call with US envoys as peace talks continue, with key European allies set to meet to assess progress.

KYIV: President Volodymyr Zelensky said he held a “very substantive and constructive” call with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Saturday.

The call focused on a US-led plan to end the nearly four-year conflict in Ukraine.

Zelensky said the discussion covered key issues to guarantee an end to the bloodshed and prevent a future Russian invasion.

“We agreed on the next steps and the format of the talks with America,” he stated on Telegram.

He was joined on the call by top Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov and armed forces chief of staff Andriy Gnatov, who are in Miami for the talks.

The two American envoys have been meeting with the Ukrainian officials since Thursday.

Zelensky emphasised Ukraine’s commitment to working honestly with the American side to achieve real peace.

He said the country’s approach is that “everything must be capable of working, every important thing for peace, security and reconstruction”.

An initial US plan released two weeks ago was revised after being seen by Kyiv and European allies as aligning too closely with Russian positions.

Zelensky said he is awaiting a detailed report from his negotiators in Miami.

“We cannot discuss everything over the phone, so we need to work in detail with the teams on ideas and proposals,” he added.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he, Zelensky, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz would meet in London on Monday.

They aim to “take stock” of the US-led negotiations.
