Zelensky ready for dialogue ahead of Berlin talks on Ukraine peace

Ukraine’s Zelensky says he is ready for dialogue as he heads to Berlin for high-stakes talks with US and European leaders on ending the war

KYIV: President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was ready for “dialogue” ahead of high-stakes talks in Berlin with a US envoy and European leaders on ending the war with Russia.

The talks follow increased pressure from US President Donald Trump on Kyiv to reach an agreement.

Trump revealed a plan last month that was criticised for echoing Moscow’s demands, including Ukraine ceding crucial territory.

The proposal has triggered intense diplomacy between the United States and Ukraine’s European allies.

Kyiv officials recently said they had sent Washington a revised version of the proposed peace plan.

Zelensky told reporters he had not yet received a formal response from Washington on Ukraine’s amendments.

“I am receiving all the signals and will be ready for the dialogue that will begin today,” he said.

“The summit in Berlin is important. We are meeting with both the Americans and the Europeans,” Zelensky added.

A White House official confirmed that Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff would meet with Zelensky and European leaders over the weekend.

“The most important thing is that the plan should be as fair as possible, first and foremost for Ukraine, because Russia started the war,” Zelensky said on Sunday.

The latest diplomatic push comes as Kyiv reported new Russian aerial strikes overnight.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 138 drones and a ballistic missile.

A Russian drone hit a hospital in Kherson, wounding two people including a nurse, the regional administration said.

Seven people were wounded in strikes on the Zaporizhzhia region, according to governor Ivan Fedorov. – AFP
