Anthony Joshua discharged from hospital after fatal Nigeria car crash

Former boxing champion Anthony Joshua leaves hospital after a car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his friends, with speed cited as a factor.

FORMER world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital after surviving a fatal car accident in Nigeria.

State officials confirmed the news on Wednesday, two days after the crash that killed two of Joshua’s close friends.

Joshua was travelling with friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele on a highway linking Lagos and Ibadan when their SUV hit a stationary truck.

The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency in Ogun state said preliminary investigations indicated the vehicle was speeding and had a burst tyre before the crash.

“Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon,” read a joint statement from Lagos and Ogun state government spokesmen.

“Though heavy hearted and full of emotion over the loss of his two close friends, he was deemed clinically fit to recuperate at home.”

Both state governments oversaw the boxer’s treatment following Monday’s incident.

After leaving the hospital, Joshua and his mother paid their respects at the funeral home where his friends’ bodies were being prepared for repatriation.

Nigerian police confirmed the two victims died at the scene.

The 36-year-old boxer was admitted to Lagos’s Lagoon Hospital, according to the official statement.

Joshua’s family is from southwest Nigeria, and he often visits the area.

Photos released by police showed the mangled wreckage of a black sports utility vehicle.

In December, Joshua knocked out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a Netflix-backed bout in Miami.

The former Olympic champion has since been linked with a potential fight against compatriot and fellow former world champion Tyson Fury. – AFP
