Seu Bock returns as Malaysia senior men’s singles head coach

Datuk Tey Seu Bock is promoted to head coach of Malaysia’s senior men’s singles badminton squad, confirmed by Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei.

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Tey Seu Bock has been promoted to head coach of the national senior men’s singles badminton squad.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Performance Committee chairman, Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, confirmed the appointment following a proposal from national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen.

“I can confirm that he will be promoted to senior,” Chong Wei told reporters on the final day of the 2026 Malaysia Open.

He stated that the experienced coach’s return was approved to assist Jonassen and collaborate with other coaches within the team.

Seu Bock, 52, is credited with guiding Chong Wei to a world championship title and three Olympic silver medals.

The coach has been with BAM since 2002 and was previously an assistant to Datuk Misbun Sidek before coaching Chong Wei from 2011.

He most recently led the national junior men’s singles team starting in October 2024.

Chong Wei highlighted Seu Bock’s proven ability to boost player performance, as evidenced during his tenure with the junior squad.

Meanwhile, BAM is expected to announce six new coaches in the near future, with a priority on local talent.

“The majority are locals, more local players. There are also those from abroad, but our first priority is local coaches,” Chong Wei said.

The association’s secretary-general, Datuk Kenny Goh, will provide further details on the new coaching structure soon.

The restructuring will also involve promoting talented young players aged 16 to 17 into the senior ranks for both singles and doubles.
