Tang Jie-Ee Wei aim for SEA Games gold after coach’s challenge

Malaysian mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei target SEA Games gold in Thailand, embracing coach Nova Widianto’s bold challenge.

KUALA LUMPUR: Reigning world mixed doubles champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei have accepted national mixed doubles head coach Nova Widianto’s challenge to win gold at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.

Ee Wei said the target demonstrates Nova’s strong belief in their ability to reclaim the gold medal for Malaysia.

Tang Jie previously won the SEA Games mixed doubles gold with Peck Yen Wei at the 2021 edition in Vietnam.

“Of course, we need to do our best to win the gold,” Ee Wei said after an engagement session with Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad.

“It’s not just about winning the medal, we have to stay disciplined in every training session.”

She added they will fight for every point and give their best for the country regardless of the outcome.

The world number three pair were recently crowned Australian Open 2025 champions.

They are among eight athletes selected for Ajinomoto’s Winning Meals Kachimeshi programme.

The programme provides a balanced nutritional plan designed by sports nutrition experts to support training and optimise performance.

The other six athletes in the programme are all from athletics events.

Nova was recently quoted saying the duo should be capable of meeting the gold medal target based on their current form.

Tang Jie said they prefer to focus on themselves rather than overanalyse rivals including Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran.

The world number four Thai pair could pose a potent threat in the battle for gold.

The 2025 SEA Games will be held from December 9-20 in Bangkok and Chonburi provinces. – Bernama
