Former England cricket chief Hugh Morris dies aged 62

Former ECB chief executive and England batsman Hugh Morris has died at 62 following a battle with bowel cancer, leaving a legacy of Ashes wins and a World Cup.

LONDON: Hugh Morris (pic), the former chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board, has died at the age of 62.

Glamorgan County Cricket Club announced the death of the former England opening batsman on Sunday.

Morris, who won three Test caps for England in 1991, also captained Glamorgan to the Sunday League title in 1993.

After retiring as a player, he held several senior roles at the ECB, serving as its managing director from 2007 to 2013.

During his tenure, England’s men’s team rose to number one in the Test rankings, won three Ashes series and claimed the 2010 T20 World Cup.

He returned to Glamorgan as chief executive in 2013, a role he held for nine years before stepping down in September 2023.

Morris had been diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2022 and left his position to focus on treatment and family.

Dan Cherry, his successor at Glamorgan, said everyone at the club was “devastated” by the news.

“As a player and administrator, Hugh led from the front,” Cherry said. “He leaves us with an outstanding legacy.”
