F1 design legend Adrian Newey will take over as Aston Martin team principal in 2026, replacing Andy Cowell after a disappointing season.
LONDON: Formula One technical mastermind Adrian Newey will become Aston Martin’s team principal in 2026.
The 66-year-old committed his long-term future to Aston Martin in September 2024 after his departure from Red Bull triggered a bidding war.
Newey reportedly clashed with current team principal Andy Cowell over the team’s direction and car design during a disappointing season.
Aston Martin announced a major reshuffle on Wednesday after speculation linked former Red Bull boss Christian Horner with the Silverstone-based team.
Newey will take charge of trackside operations next season while Cowell moves to a new role as chief strategy officer.
Cowell will focus on the team’s engine partnership with Honda in his revised position.
“Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team,” said Newey, who joined Aston Martin as managing technical partner in March.
“I’m looking forward to taking on this additional role as we put ourselves in the best possible position to compete in 2026.”
Newey has contributed to 13 drivers’ world championships and 12 constructors’ titles with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.
This marks his first appointment as team principal despite his legendary technical career.
“Both of these changes will ensure the team is best placed to play to their collective strengths,” said Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll.
Aston Martin currently sits eighth in the constructors’ standings with two races remaining this season. – AFP
