Atletico Madrid legend Enrique Collar dies at age 91

Atletico Madrid mourns the death of club legend Enrique Collar, who captained the team to a league title and three Copa del Rey triumphs.

ATLETICO Madrid has announced the death of club legend Enrique Collar at the age of 91.

The club described him as a symbol who gave everything to take Atletico to the pinnacle of national and continental football.

Collar scored 105 goals in 470 appearances for the club between 1953 and 1969.

He served as captain for 10 years in the 1960s, making him Atletico’s longest-serving skipper.

The left winger scored in the 1960 Copa del Rey final as Atletico defeated rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

He went on to win further Copa del Rey titles with the club in 1961 and 1965.

Under his leadership, Atletico claimed the 1965/66 La Liga title during a decade of Real Madrid dominance.

Collar also won the 1962 European Cup Winners’ Cup with the Spanish capital club.

He earned 16 caps for Spain and played at the 1962 World Cup in Chile.

Collar retired in 1970 after a final season with Valencia. – AFP
