Barcelona’s Flick calls current job his last but contract future unclear

Hansi Flick says leading Barcelona will be his final role in football, but a contract extension beyond 2027 is not yet decided.

BARCELONA: Hansi Flick has confirmed that managing Barcelona will be his final job in football, though his contract renewal remains uncertain.

The 61-year-old coach’s current deal runs until 2027, with president Joan Laporta planning a one-year extension.

Flick emphasised his happiness at the club but said he must consult his family before making a decision.

“It’s not the right moment (for that), tomorrow is a very important game for us, for the club, for the future,” Flick told reporters.

He added that his focus is solely on Barcelona’s crucial Champions League last 16 second leg against Newcastle United.

Barcelona drew 1-1 in a difficult first leg in England last week.

“It will be a tough game tomorrow. They’re a physical team, aggressive man-to-man, in transition they are fast players,” Flick said.

The German coach led the team to a domestic treble and the Champions League semi-finals last season.

Young defender Pau Cubarsi believes the team can deliver a much-improved performance at the Camp Nou.

“The intensity they had at their stadium was spectacular,” said the 19-year-old.

“We had a good defensive set-up but lacked fluidity in attack. It will be different. We’re at home with the fans supporting us.”
