China edge Taiwan in extra time to reach Asian Cup semis

China secured a tense 2-0 extra-time victory over Taiwan to advance to the Women’s Asian Cup semi-finals and book a World Cup spot.

CHINA secured a tense 2-0 extra-time victory over Taiwan to advance to the Women’s Asian Cup semi-finals on Saturday.

The defending champions, chasing a record-extending 10th title, were held 0-0 after 90 minutes before finally breaking the deadlock.

Shao Ziqin scored the crucial opening goal just four minutes into extra time at Perth Rectangular Stadium.

China missed a chance to double their lead when Wurigumula’s penalty was saved ten minutes later.

They sealed the win four minutes after that thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Taiwan defender Chen Ying-hui.

China had a first-half goal from Wang Shuang disallowed following a VAR review.

The victory books China a semi-final clash against hosts Australia.

It also guarantees China a place at next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Taiwan will now compete with other losing quarter-finalists for two remaining World Cup spots in playoffs on the Gold Coast next week.
