Harry Kane scores two quick goals as Bayern Munich beat Union Saint-Gilloise 2-0 to secure a top-eight finish and a Champions League knockout spot
HARRY Kane scored twice in three second-half minutes to fire Bayern Munich into the Champions League last 16 with a 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise.
The victory secured a top-eight finish in the 36-team league phase, allowing Bayern to avoid a potential two-legged knockout play-off round.
The six-time European champions sit second in the standings behind Arsenal with one league-phase game remaining.
Kane broke the deadlock by heading in from a Michael Olise corner after 52 minutes.
He then won and converted a penalty just a minute later to put the hosts firmly in control.
The England captain missed a late chance for a hat-trick, blasting a second penalty against the crossbar after Bayern centre-back Kim Min-jae had been sent off.
“Coming back into the second half we wanted to show more intensity and I think we did that,” Kane told DAZN.
“We scored at the right times, were a bit unlucky with the red card but even after that when we went down to 10 men we controlled the game well.”
Bayern’s only loss this season remains their Champions League defeat at Arsenal.
The German giants have already opened up an 11-point lead in the Bundesliga.
Kane’s second goal was his 34th of the campaign across all competitions.
Bayern were sluggish in a first half played in a partially closed stadium due to a UEFA sanction.
The best chance of the opening period fell to Union SG’s Promise David, who headed directly at goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Kim Min-jae, handed a rare start, was sent off in the 63rd minute for a second bookable offence.
The red card did not disrupt Bayern’s flow, with Olise also missing a late chance to extend the lead.
